New Law to Put Service Families at Top of Housing Queue

Grant Shapps, the Housing Minister, is to publish plans requiring local authorities to give "high priority for social housing" to armed forces personnel "with a pressing housing need." The proposed change in the law, which will be put out to public consultation, would be likely to apply to veterans and their families as well as serving members of the armed forces. Other new regulations which are likely to come in will give more help to military families who have to move home when posts shift from one base to another. Some families face compulsory orders to move hundreds of miles at very short notice. Councils will in future have to show that such families are "not disadvantaged" when it comes to drawing up criteria for allocating social housing. Read more on the Daily Telegraph website.
