Councillor Wants to House Homeless in Caravans

A Wigan councillor has called on his local authority to house homeless people in caravans in a bid to help the council save money and cut its waiting list. Independent councillor Bob Brierley has argued it would provide a cost-effective way to accommodate dozens of families. He explained that the ‘Stepping Stone’ scheme would help “educate” the tenants by giving them a first step towards a council house while easing the pressure for the local authority. Mr Brierley argued that it would allow young families to “walk into a new home with everything to hand, with agreement that if they look after their accommodation, they will be allowed to apply for a larger home as their families grow”. There are currently 5,000 people waiting for a council home in Wigan. Read more on the Wigan Observer.
