Council's Two-Year Tenancy Bid 'To Tackle Youth Unemployment'

Westminster City Council is to offer two-year social housing tenancies to young people in work or embarking on higher education or training who wouldn't normally be prioritised on the waiting list.  In partnership with Shepherds Bush Housing Group and the InComE Project, the pilot scheme aims to tackle youth unemployment in central London.  At the end of their two-year terms, tenants - who will be given employment support such as mentoring, advice on work schemes and career training - will be supported by the council to move into shared accommodation or intermediate housing.  It follows powers in the Localism Act - which comes into play from next month - which allows councils to offer fixed term tenancies with a minimum of two years.  The candidates, says the council, must be willing to start college, training or be in current employment.  Read more on 24dash.
