LONDON councils' plans to use Derby as a "dumping
ground" for people in housing need will pile pressure on the city's
services and drag down the area's image, according to local politicians. One Labour Derby councillor said the system
was akin to "human trafficking" with families being
"exported" to the city. Three councils in London
are considering sending homeless families to live in Derby
and Nottingham because changes in the housing benefit system are making it too
expensive to rent homes for them in London.
At first, 150 properties could be bought up specifically to be used by needy London families. And that number could increase to up to 500
homes. Families expected to need the
housing will be those arriving in London from
other areas of the UK
or the EU, either looking for work or to be closer to relatives. It would not
include asylum seekers. Read more on the
Derby Telegraph website.
