Council's Landlord Licencing Consultation Breached Data Rules

Nottingham City Council's consultation for a proposed landlord licencing scheme has breached data protection rules and will result in rents going up, according to the Residential Landlords Association (RLA).  Currently, only three-storey HMOs which have five or more tenants have to be licensed but the council is now proposing that landlords would have to obtain a licence to rent out property with three or more tenants. The RLA has criticised the council after it admitted that its consultation breached the Data Protection Act in releasing personal data information.  The law sets the criteria required for an additional licensing scheme to be implemented, but the RLA claims that the council has failed to say how these criteria have been met or what the purpose is for the licencing scheme. Furthermore, the RLA claims that no indication has been given as to how much the scheme will cost local taxpayers. Read more on 24dash.
