Figures released by the CLG show that 53,540 households were
accepted as homeless by their local council in the 2012/2013 financial year –
an increase of six per cent on last year and the third consecutive year that
homelessness has risen. Over the last two years there has been a 23 per cent
rise in statutory homelessness acceptances while over the last three years
there has been a 34 per cent rise. In England in 2012/13:
*53,540 households
were officially homeless, an increase of six per cent on the previous year
*55,300 households
are in temporary accommodation, including 4, 500 living in B&Bs
*One in four became
homeless because their tenancy in the private rented sector ended
*In London there has been a 16
per cent increase in homelessness over the last year.
