Nearly 3,000 households have had their incomes slashed as a
result of the total benefits cap trialled in four London boroughs. The government’s £26,000-a-year cap on
household benefits, including housing benefit, was implemented early in four
boroughs from 15 April. At the end of
June, 2,658 households were affected. A total of 1,621 were experiencing
benefit cuts of £50 per week or more, while 1,037 were losing less than £50 per
week. The vast majority of those capped, 97.3 per cent, were households with
children.
