Housing Benefit: Fraud – Parliamentary Written Answer

Steve McCabe: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what the estimated level of housing benefit fraud in England was in (a) 2009-10, (b) 2010-11 and (c) 2011-12.
Steve Webb: I have been asked to reply on behalf of the DWP.  The figures for England only are not available. The estimated levels of housing benefit fraud in Great Britain are as follows: (a) £250 million (1.2% of spend) in 2009-10, (b) £300 million (1.4% of spend) in 2010-11 and (c) £350 million (1.5% of spend) in 2011-12.  The information is derived from the 2012-13 preliminary estimates of benefit fraud and error.
