The number of social homes sold has risen by 128 per cent
in five years, figures released by the CLG show. In 2012/13, 16,659 social homes were sold
compared with 7,309 sold in 2008/09. The number of sales for this year to April
increased by 72 per cent from the previous year. More than half of the social homes sold in
2012/13, 8,398, were bought through the right to buy scheme. This figure
alongside an additional 2,149 homes, which were sold between April and June,
takes the number of right to buy sales up to more than 10,000. The 8,398 figure
was more than double amount bought in the 2011/12 and the new junior housing
minister said he believed this rise is down to the government increasing the
discount cap to £75,000 in April 2012. Read more on the Govuk website.
