Shelter and Crisis are calling on the government to make
urgent reforms to private renting after a landmark investigation by the
charities revealed the significant struggles faced by homeless people rehoused
in the sector. The report is the result
of a three-year investigation – the largest of its kind – following 128
formerly homeless families and individuals in England over 19 months who have
been found a place to live in privately rented accommodation. The charities are calling for improved
conditions in rented homes, longer term tenancies to provide stability, tougher
enforcement for landlords who ignore their responsibilities, and more support
for all people recovering from homelessness moving in to private renting.
