Don't Build New Houses: Make Them in a Factory

Nottinghamshire company Spinelock UK has an innovative approach to building homes. The firm 'engineers' houses rather than simply constructs them. Homes are manufactured and assembled in their factory, in four parts. The average three-bedroom home sells for £159,000. As well as being quick to build, the homes are also cheap to run – with a range of eco-gadgets meaning running costs are as low as £250 a year. Houses are built to engineering standards, with insulation, rainwater harvesting and renewable energy systems incorporated into the design. They are then lifted onto the back of a lorry, transported to the site and placed on pile foundations and quickly locked together using Spinelock's patented joining system.
