Proportionally there were almost four times more
overcrowded social homes than overcrowded owner occupied homes in England and
Wales, based on information released by the Office for National Statistics. Of
the 23.4 million households in England and Wales registered in the 2011 census,
1.1 million homes were overcrowded. Overcrowding was most common in socially
rented homes at 8.7 per cent, 360,000 homes, of the overall households
registered. This was closely followed by overcrowding in privately rented homes
at 8.6 per cent, 362,000 homes. Both of these were around four times more than
the 2.3 per cent of overcrowded owner occupied homes, 341,000 homes. Read more
