The ONS Statistical bulletin for the “Index of Private
Housing Rental Prices (IPHRP), April to June 2014” emphasises key areas from
within the private rented sector (PRS). Specifically these are:
·
Private rental prices paid by tenants in Great
Britain rose by 1.0% in the 12 months to June 2014
·
Private rental prices grew by 1.0% in England,
1.1% in Scotland and 0.2% in Wales during the 12 months to June 2014
·
Rental prices increased in all English regions
over the year 2014, with rental prices increasing the most in London (1.4%)
These findings show that despite popular belief, private
landlords are not putting up their rents and, on the contrary, are providing on
the whole rents that are rising less than social housing when many landlords
are now housing tenants that would normally be housed by local authorities.
