Radical plans are needed to get almost a quarter of a
million long-term empty homes back onto the market and help ease the housing
crisis, a think-tank has urged. Despite 1.4 million people stuck on waiting
lists for council houses and homelessness rising, there are 218,000 homes in
England alone that have been unoccupied for more than six months, according to
IPPR North. To bring empty homes back into use more quickly, IPPR North proposes:
• Letting local government decide their own taxes and
funding programmes for empty homes
• Cutting from two years to one the qualifying period for
taxing empty homes
