One of the UK's leading professional housing bodies has
issued an urgent call for "genuinely affordable homes for rent" in
both the public and private sector. Responding to the government's 'One Nation'
housebuilding proposals, RICS said freeing up councils and housing associations
- as well as "encouraging the institutionalised private rented
sector" was vital. Jeremy Blackburn, RICS Head of Policy, said: “Targets
for owner-occupation, rather than greater capacity across all tenures, is the
consistent message we are getting from government. While the Prime Minister and
the Chancellor have called it a plan for ‘one nation homeownership’, we
urgently need to increase genuinely affordable homes for rent in both public
