The number of private renters in England continues to
increase above the figure for social housing households as homeownership
declines. Data from the English Housing Survey shows private rented sector
(PRS) household numbers continue to outstrip figures for social housing
households. The survey shows at the end of 2013/14 there were 4.4m households
in the PRS, compared to 3.9m in social housing. This means there are now around half a
million more people living in the PRS than in social housing. The number of PRS
renters overtook the figure for social housing for the first time in decades in
2011/12. Download the data from the GovUK website.
