'Public Land Sell-Off To Deliver Up To 100,000 New Homes'

The Government is expected to announce this week a database of all publicly-owned land which will be used to build up to 100,000 new homes. The land will be sold off to developers using the Government's "buy now, pay later" scheme, announced in this year's budget. Under the scheme, housebuilders will be given surplus government land which they will only pay for once properties built on it are sold. The new homes are expected to be a mixture of owner-occupied properties and social housing. It's understood housing associations will be able to bid for land either directly or alongside other developers. As part of moves already made by Government, the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has published its land assets, and the first sites to benefit from the 'build now, pay later' scheme have also been announced.
