A government scheme to provide accommodation for homeless people will only supply a third of the ‘extra’ beds ministers promised. Last month, housing minister Grant Shapps announced that the latest round of the homelessness change programme would provide ‘1,200 extra bed spaces’ - those in addition to existing provision - through £37.5 million of funding. A press release from the CLG described them solely as ‘extra’ beds. But figures obtained from the HCA reveal that of 1,179 beds in 37 projects funded by the programme, only 390 will be additional beds. The remaining 789 beds announced by Mr Shapps as being ‘extra’ will, in fact, be existing beds classed as ‘reprovision’ - improvement of older services or a change in use such as a dormitory arrangement to single rooms.
