Parents of children under three years old are now expected
to share a bedroom with their child under emergency changes to a council’s
housing allocations policy. Westminster Council has altered its rules so homeless
families consisting of one or two parents and a child under three can be moved
from temporary accommodation into one-bedroom properties. Previously they would
have been placed in two-bedroom homes. The Labour group on the council said the
authority was treating homeless people ‘like second class citizens’ and the
change in policy showed the ‘depth of the worsening housing crisis’. It said if
families refused the offer of a one-bedroom property the council would not
offer them any further support. Read
