There is likely to be little room for low income households
in tomorrow’s ‘social’ housing, a thinktank has suggested, as housing
associations are driven ‘up-market’ towards higher-value commercial exploits to
support their businesses. Nevertheless,
according to the report, the sector’s social conscience remains strong, as they
seek to balance commercial realities with their social purpose. With the
context of changing economic and policy environment, such as reduced grant,
welfare reform, growing private rented sector, and a “fragile” economy, as well
as new freedoms granted to social landlords, the report examines how today’s
conditions will shape the sector of tomorrow.
