Unemployment is a serious problem currently affecting the UK , standing at
7.9% in April 2013. However unemployment among residents of social housing is
at 20%. This large disparity shows the acute need to tackle unemployment in
this section of the population. One way of doing this which is gaining
popularity among social landlords is through social enterprises that share the
social mission of helping residents into work. Procuring a social landlord’s
goods and services through social enterprises ensures that spending results in
residents gaining jobs. For the more committed social landlords, creating
social enterprises and supporting social enterprises that fulfil community
needs can also create more jobs along the way. A further method is to support
residents to create small businesses or social enterprises of their own. Read more on the Charity Works 360 website.
