The chronic shortage of affordable housing stock remains
one of the biggest problems facing this nation. So much so that a £250,000
prize is being offered to anyone who can come up with an adequate solution. The
Wolfson Economics Prize was launched on 14 November as a way of inviting ideas
on how to deliver a new City that is “visionary, economically viable, and
popular”. It was set up by Lord Wolfson, chief executive of Next, who believes
there isn’t sufficient focus on Britain's housing crisis. So what can be done
to counter this mounting problem? Here, we take a look at four possible
solutions – some more drastic than others.
1. Open up the house-building market
2. Make more land available at reasonable prices
3. Ban ownership of two homes
4. Encourage downsizing
