The Labour Party’s proposed policy to introduce a system
of annual indexation of private rents will ‘only serve to encourage a culture
of regular rental increases’, the National Landlords Association had said. The NLA said the indexation would encourage a
culture of regular rental increases because it would ‘provide the basis to
legitimately escalate rents on a regular and sustainable basis’. Emma Reynolds hinted that Labour was
considering indexing private sector rents to Inside Housing last October and Ed
Miliband announced the party’s PRS plans at the beginning of May. Recent
research by the NLA said that, over the past year, many landlords have chosen
not to raise their rents despite local market rates increasing. Read more on
the NLA website.
